Orange Poppy Seeds Cake Recipe
  • 1.5 C all purpose flour/ plain flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 113 gm/1 stick butter
  • 1 C caster sugar
  • 3 large organic eggs
  • ¼ C vegetable oil
  • ⅓ C fresh orange juice
  • 1 tbsp orange zest (from 1 big orange)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp black poppy seeds
  • ⅓ C milk
  1. Preheat oven to 170° C and grease a loaf pan or 9 (or 10) inch round cake tin.
  2. Combine poppy seeds and milk and set aside for 30 mins.
  3. Sift the flour, salt and baking powder and keep aside.
  4. Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time while continuing the beating.
  5. Add oil, vanilla extract, orange juice, poppy seeds (along with milk) and orange zest. Mix well. You will see your batter is getting curdled, don't worry. It will be just fine!
  6. Add flour in 3 installments and fold gently using spatula. Pour the mixture into prepared loaf pan.
  7. Bake for 55-60 mins or the toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let it rest in pan for 5 mins. Remove the cake from the pan and cool completely on wire rack.
1. My cake was very very soft. It has already 3 eggs so next time I'll add only 2 tbsp of oil as I felt this above measurement (1/4 cup) of oil is too much.
2. Hubby suggested to add more orange juice to get more pronounced citrusy flavour. Next time I would increase to ½ cup.
3. The amount of poppy seeds is too much, I feel. It would be reduced to 2 tbsp and it's enough.
